The first photo demonstrates what muscles groups we should be activating to move from a sitting to standing position. With feet grounded, bend knees and activate the large muscle groups in the thighs and buttocks, keeping spine in line and over the tailbone as you rise. The second photo shows activation of the previous muscle groups, plus the tightening of the core (abdominals and lower back) to maintain stability when walking up stairs.
